Essay writing is a core skill in academic studies and is essential for academic success.
The series of writing courses described here are developed and conducted by Dr. Lydia Gore-Jones, with an aim of helping students from high school to university to master the skills of writing essays.
The writing series will cover different aspects of essay writing, from generating ideas, planning coherent paragraph and essay structures, to constructing logical argument and writing in correct vocabulary, grammar and academic style.
Foundations of Essay Writing
Essay Writing Workshop
Reading for Writing Workshop
This workshop can be taken either as a continuation of the foundation course or on its own.
Students will further practise how to generate ideas for writing, and how to organise their ideas into a coherent and strong essay.
Five short reading texts will be studied and discussed.
Students will be guided to turn the ideas that are generated in the discussions into logically structured, well supported and coherently argued essays.
Grammar for Writing Workshop
The focus of this course is grammatical accuracy and syntactical diversity in essay writing. It provides analysis of the most common grammatical errors that frequently occur in students’ writing, and teaches the students how to write in appropriate style, using sophisticated structures.
Stand-alone The Writing Clinic
Students can book a one-on-one or small group sessions in which they will receive detailed feedback and corrections on their own writing, in terms of ideas, structure, quality of content, academic style as well as correct use of English language.
